Interesting.  It is as fatal as I thought.  I was hoping to blame it
on resources or something.

Nothing in dmesg or any relevant system logs after the mplayer
failure.

Strange.  IIRC, I had this problem once before and reboot resolved it.
I will reboot again and see if the problem clears itself up if you are
done with any testing/probing you want me to do.
