is it really? I always thought that odd and even are much more
intuitive than using something as unrelated as top and bottom. If
however top and bottom is actually the commonly-used terminology we
should perhaps adapt to it.

You can start numbering at something but 0? I wasn't aware of that;
perhaps I have been coding C for too long ;-)
