I hope you all don't mind me leaping in with a question out of the blue 
like this but I've been trying to control my screen power using 
IDirectFBDisplayLayer::SetScreenPowerMode() but it doesn't seem to work 
at all.

From what I can tell from reading the source, perhaps this is because I 
am using the VESA driver and DPMS is not supported by vesafb in the 
kernel. Is this correct or should it work for all drivers ?

If so, is there some other way I can blank the screen, perhaps through 
an IOCTL or some system call ?

I am using kernel 2.4.20 and DirectFB 0.9.18.
