Yes I plan to support 2.8 until the directfb backend is stable and complete.

We will be doing the same. My approach is to try and figure out a way
to do fine grained builds so you can cut at the component level and at
the function level for a build. I'm not sure autoconf is up to the job
and am thinking of some sort of xml file format that could be used by
a gui tool. The linux kernel build has the "right" idea maybe it can
be used or if anyone has suggestions there welcome. In any event my
goal is to try to create a formal way to cutdown libraries in general
for embedded use. One idea I like is to run a preprocess that
actually cuts out the "offending" code and generates real reduced
sources for compile instead of filling the files with ifdefs. Since I
think you mentioned this is a thesis project I'd consider formal
methods for code reduction a academic exercise :)

No problem I find trying to stuff large libraries on small devices a
rewarding challenge :) The whole area of trying to bring desktop
functionality to mobile devices is finally causing the holy grail of
code reuse to become commercially important.
