I don't know against which kernel version the i830 driver was coded, but i think it's on a 2.6 kernel The last modif I've done on intelfb to work more nicely with directfb i830 is in the last 2.6.12-mm1 kernel. The kernel patches have just been send out by Andrew Morton to the main kernel tree, so i think they'll be in 2.6.12-rc1 if you don't want to get a mm kernel. The intelfb driver has changed a lot when i ported it to kernel 2.6 compared to the 2.4 version, so i don't know it if will be easy to backport the changes.

I did a small patch to fix minor issues with i830 gfxdriver. Now
the driver can more nicely live with the linux intelfb driver. Now it
can be used even when intelfb has accel set to 1, just in configuring
in /etc/fb.modes "accel false" to disable console acceleration when
DirectFB is working. To work, the last intelfb patch is needed. I just
sended it to linux-fbdev mailing list and Andrew Morton and it should
be in the next mm series of linux kernels.

with what kernel version is current cvs directfb's i830 driver supposed
to work? i tried 2.4.31 with an pentium-m ETX board (i855 chipset), but
directfb only comes up with the software rasterizer. i managed to
compile i810 and i830 drivers by adding the needed I81X_ACCEL defines to
linux/include/fb.h, though. intelfb is also compiled in and works.

do i need the latest 2.6 kernel?

thanx ...
