Hi,
as I wrote on previous post, the debian team has chosen to use
Directfb for developing the graphical frontend of the installer;
I just wanted to let you know the status of things.
A lot of work has been done in the last few weeks in order to set up
a build infrastucture which will be used to integrate a graphical
version of the installer in the main line of developement of the d-i,
and which will "produce" automatic daily builds.

The infrastucture has been done and brought already good results at
least for the i386 architecture; powerpc is being worked on and
hopefully other ports will follow soon. ATM we have all the official
debian packages (udebs) needed to build the graphical installer, plus
a couple of unofficial tarballs containing some fonts. The libraries we
use are very outdated (gtk+-directfb_2.0.9), but they do work and no
other versions have been packaged so far, so it's best to stick with
official stuff.
Here are a few screenshots:

In case you wanted to try it yourself, grab it (i386) from here:

ciao
Davide
