After some googling, looks like the problem has been spotted already and has been tracked down in the Debian BTS as #340073:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=340073&sourceid=mozilla-search Problem showed up with the new version of binutils and looks like the fix has to be applied to cairo sources. I'll get back as soon as I've fixed it Ciao Davide
