Can't say I agree with that.

Right, so the initial bandwidth requirements may be higher than with
centralized systems, but it should amortize over time because most
things can be done offline.

That'll depend on the project. The X.Org xserver repository contains the
history of several years on dozens of branches; the unpacked source code
amounts to >50MB, but the repository is just above 20MB. YMMV.
Also note that you only need to download everything the very first time.
When cloning the same repository again, you can reference existing local
clones.
