I tried recently with a matrox g450 and various arrangements of Qt embedded, XDirectFB, et al. From occasional posts on the mythtv mailing lists over the last couple of months, I'd say at any given time there's 1-3 people like you, vaguely interested and maybe doing a little experimenting. There's some documentation on the myth wiki, but it's out of date and I suspect relates to myth 0.18 or 0.19, certainly not current myth code. Basically your options are - give it a go, try everything you can think of.
