You could control (in one panel) a number of applications which are
playing sound, either for correcting too different volume levels or
to temporarily mute the application without changing its state. I
needed this once when I was recording a stream with XMMS while hearing
it. I could not stop or pause, but wanted to mute the sound temporarily
or at least make it much more quiet.

Per playback would be nice, but a global one would be enough in most cases.
