Well, DirectFB still has all its chances for the 2D part, such as for
driving any dedicated 2D h/w acceleration, multi-process IPC (sharing
ressourses), etc. and could nicely fit in the "new"
landscape/trend/architecture.

IMHO, from now on it's going to be about efficiently sharing access to 2D
and 3D buffers across the various rendering APIs.
