Quick update :-) I took a closer look, and when running any of the directfb examples on my Radeon 7500, the power light on my monitor dims like it does when DPMS puts the display to sleep or the monitor is being told to change to a frequency it doesn't support (which is really odd because this is the same monitor that worked with the original radeon).
Also, does anyone know what happened to the archives of the mailing lists? They seem to have stopped in February...
