Just a little bit more info: It's as if it's not trying to render any fonts.. For example, the menu in gimp that comes from clicking on the right mouse button in an image is extremely narrow. For menu options that have icons, the icon displays, but with no text next to it.
BTW, pango and freetype seem to be fine. pango-viewer works just like expected under X.
