For anyone experiencing similar trouble, I discovered that the problem lie with radeonfb. My Radeon 8500 came with an adapter that allows one to connect a CRT to the DV port. When I connected my CRT to the DV port with the adapter, radeonfb was better able to handle things like fbset invocations and fbdev apps like mplayer. After some tweaking, I got DFBSee and XDirectFB going. There seems to be a problem with radeonfb though.
