Thanks to Denis & Jiri, Unfortunately 'mplayer -vo dfbmga:bes <filename>' did not work:
>Can't get BES layer - Not supported! >Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device. Installing the latest mplayer CVS snapshot did have some success. The original error no longer shows, & all seems to be well. Frame is reported as being active & no errors show at all, however the original problem still remains: Screen stays black, while audio is fine. Mplayer's OSD works ok. Thanks for the swift replies, I'm all out of ideas here. Have googled hard but to no avail. Just a bunch of people with the same problem & no solutions as of right now.
