Quoting Ed Sweetman:
Ok, i got fusion loaded. XdirectX compiled against cvs of X, directfb cvs compiled and mplayer compiled against it. mplayer plays movies and all as long as i play something small. Which has me thinking that there is some configuration having to do with resolution that i'm missing with it. XDirectX wont load because of it (i need 1280x1024 for lcd and simple use purposes but it seems to only like lower resolutions)
What is the error message of XDirectFB?
Which framebuffer driver are you using?
What does "fbset -i" say?
ahh, didn't think i was going to get a response for this thread anymore.
XDirectFB wasn't throwing errors really. It would hang on loading if the resolution was not to it's liking. I dont know how it decides what is it's liking as it should be using the same modelines my normal X server uses but it doesn't and i'm fairly sure fbset doesn't work in 2.6 at all (very current patches do provide fbset abilities but that is newer than mine). My modeline in fb.conf is the 1280x1024 one with 75hz vertical refresh. I'm not sure if the modeline matches the one i'm using now.

Accelerator : Matrox G400X changes my fb settings upon load, my console is all garbled and a mess when i load my fb with the fb console drivers. I've hand tuned my X configure file but none of the options are aggressive right now.
My card is 32MB but of course the fb can only use 16.
When X wouldn't lock up and cause the computer to need to be rebooted, it would show just a garbled mess. The same thing that mplayer shows when i try to use directfb output in normal X. In fact, when i use mplayer and direct output to dfbmga:bes not only is the video only displayed if it's smaller than a certain resolution, but attempts to scale it fail and my cursor is left horribly corrupted once the video is closed.
I basically wanted to use directfb to get more 2d speed out of my slow matrox card, especially by having things like alpha blending be actually hardware accelerated, and having better performance with manipulating and drawing windows. Also, the video output triple buffers and such. But the stability is still not there it seems and whatever is going on in my system seems to be giving it a hard time.
Does directfb offer anything more than xmga (looks like it's basically the same bes interface) for mplayer. Basically, i know xmga, can hack it and all that, so I guess for now, i'll be using xmga unless there's something significant directfb can give in the video rendering dept, without forcing me to hit the reset button when it fails.
