My RAM speed is 266MHz and the BIOS is 1.0F. It is a brand-name one. Some of your suggestions are very helpful (thank you) but cannot fix my video overlay problem. So finally I replaced my debian installation with Gentoo and installed all packages on top of it.
This time the problem is still the overlay problem but the other way around. The overlay layer now cannot show font and pics but can show video.
