The vesafb framebuffer driver needs VESA 2.0 but since almost all cards have vesa support nowadays, it means that almost all cards are supported. However only software fallbacks will be used unless there's a DirectFB driver for your particular gfx card. How much benefit you get from using such a driver depends on the hardware and how well it is supported.
