It's not a chipset I'm familiar with. Check down the bottom of the patch
you attached for a list of supported savage based cards.
Though from the model you describe above, it reads like it could be
either a PROSAVAGE_PM or an S3TWISTER (not sure if this is right).

Short answer, no. Compile in kernel either Vesa or savagefb but not
both.

I haven't tried the savagefb in about 4 months, some work may have been
done on it since then.
However, I actually got better results using plain VesaFB.
By this I mean, no artifacts present in console (though the workaround
was to turn off acceleration, this kinda defeated the purpose).
The transition through from opaque to transparent was also much smoother
using VesaFB in XDirectFB.
