I'd like to be able to use the box as a desktop PC (i.e., Freevo uses second head for TV output, first head goes to monitor for websurfing and stuff).

Is there anything I should look out for to improve performance, or
should I just get a better computer?
for this purpose i installed 2 cards in my system, one nvidia agp for X and one g450 pci that drives either TV or projector.
i also have two soundcards (onboard and pci) which allows for totally independent display of freevo on TV while working with X on the nvidia. :)
