That sounds exactly like what I'm seeing: things seem to work fine (apart from ignoring my keyboard) and then never return to the shell. I _think_ this is glibc 2.3.5 that I'm using on that machine (can't check right now but it is a fairly recent Debian package (probably the same version as is on the Epia box where it works!).
