Actually, I got it to work - I hacked the directfb source, and removed all 
instances of setting the tty to graphic mode, that fixed it perfectly.

And yes, I am well aware of the direcfbrc option 'no-graphics-vt', no idea 
why, your code is completely ignoring it.
