I am seeing similar behaviour. This is with a custom application and a
small form factor pc.

The application displays a slideshow, when a certain amount of time (and 
thus images), the output to the display stops, but the application does 
not hang.

I have tracked this down to a memory leak somewhere in directfb or some 
level lower.

Could you please try and monitor the memory usage using `top' or similar, 
and running mplayer with a forced *very* low framerate? eg ``mplayer -fps 
0.5 foo.avi''
