That's true, Etch's graphical installer will be GTKDFB based.
Debian unstable repository also includes (slightly out of date) gtkdfb 
and cairodfb binary packages.
I also remember once a live linux cd that used DFB instead of X11 
existed, its name was "bizantinos" or something like that...
