I know I don't have any kernel sources on the hard drive.  I didn't know if the directFB package put doc's that location or not.  How much of a gain will I possibly see by switching from the vesa driver?  I don't have a great video card.  It is an embedded via chipset.

You don't necessarily have any kernel sources on you system. Install
them via your package management system or grab a tarball from a
kernel.org mirror. There are probably places on the web where you can
read that stuff online too.
