Well, I did not use any package manager. I do a manual install in
$HOME of all relevant libraries from source.

I tried that for a while, too. But I found that as far as I can see, the
installation in $HOME should be possible.

Yes, if you have a PPC mmx will be disabled anyway, so I think it is
reasonable to use disable-mmx on OSX Intel to avoid additional problems.
And I saw a lot of them if I leave mmx enabled.

What a pity. I suspect that this is a real problem. I can't find a
definition of SHCALLOC, which takes two parameters in the source.
