Actually I had a couple of problems.  Fedora has a directory called 
/usr/lib/pkgconfig, 32 bit, and /usr/lib64/pkgconfig.  Under the default 
install library directory /usr/lib things like DirectFB-extras fail to find the 
configured package, so if it is 64 bit compiled I found you need to switch the 
lib directory to /usr/lib64.  But thanks for the information.
