Good question. I just found out that Imlib2 is actually supported by an 'extra' package of DirectFB. You can download DirectFB-extra via the homepage, or simply use this link: http://www.directfb.org/index.php?path=Main%2FDownloads&page=1
You need to make sure that the DirectFB-imlib library is installed alongside the jpeg and gif libraries, but the configure process should take care of that. And make sure you have imlib2 installed of course.
