I'd love to see this also.  Primarily, this would be good for initial
back-ups that need to be over the wire, and so can take days in some cases.
It also would be of value for large jobs that fail part way through (network
goes down, source server crashes, disk runs out of space, etc.).  I waste
too much time re-backing up files that I picked up successfully before the
job failed.
 
In a related vein, I'd like to see failed back-ups be added to the *.hist
file, probably with a flag to indicate they shouldn't be used as a basis for
subsequent back-ups.  The reasoning here is that I frequently run into a
scenario in which a job sometime back in history has failed part way through
and is now taking up disk space, but will never expire.  If the failed job
were in the .hist file, dirvish-expire would at least clean it up on-time
when I've forgotten to.
