IIRC, rsync -aH will do it iff you point it at the whole tree (vault.)
I'm guessing it examines all of the hardlinks and compares inodes or
something along those lines.
Aside: I seem to recall some mention of dirvish (or remote rsync) not
preserving hardlinks. Is that at a given version (I just tried 2.6.9
-> 2.6.2(remote) and it worked fine) or just lack of -H?

So malloc calls a timeout and starts rummaging around the free chain,
sorting things out, and merging adjacent small free blocks into larger
blocks. This takes 3 1/2 days.
