I just noticed a problem with my instructions: The -R parameter ought to be -R 12321:localhost:22. Otherwise the SSH backchannel from the server to the client will not work by default. Apart from that, I once again recommend the principle of my solution which 1) needs no external mechanism to trigger backups 2) leverages rsync's abilities to efficiently transfer between local and remote(!) directories - which you would lose with a sshfs mount or something like that 3) enforces privilege separation and "walling in" privileged processes as well as possible for something that inherently needs to run as root like dirvish.
