I believe rsync always does binary diffs, but the diffs are only use to lower network bandwidth, a full copy of each version is store on disk. The best way to use encryption for dirvish's data storage is to use an encrypted filesystem such as LUKS, dm-crypt, or TrueCrypt. I have a backup script which mounts a LUKS encrypted filesystem, runs dirvish-expire and dirvish-runall, followed by unmounting LUKS. The LUKS code is only a couple of lines for mount and unmount and should be simple to maintain as a wrapper around dirvish.
