New drive installed, formatted as ext3, and UUID determined and entered in /etc/fstab to be mounted on /media/hd0. It's been a couple of years since I set up dirvish and I'm not seeing what else I need to do to start using this new drive. The /etc/dirvish/master.conf remains, and so does the cron job. I vaguely recall needing to manually run a base backup to the drive for each of the defined vaults in the single bank (only one host being backed up). Reading Jason Boxman's HOWTO I'm not seeing what remains to be done. Pointers to the rest of the process are appreciated. On a related topic: while laptop hard drives are meant to be turned on and off, I'm wondering if doing so with the failed WD Caviar Blue drive shortened its life. Since the PC-1 with a hard drive there's always been the debate about leaving a system with the hard drive spun up or shutting it down each night. I know that hard drives have improved over the past 3 decades but would like your opinions on whether to leave this external drive on continuously or shut it off in the morning and turn it on in the evening.
