Sounds like you don't have ALSA installed and/or configured.
On my Mandriva 2006 machine I see this:
$ rpm -qa | grep alsa
libalsa2-1.0.9-1mdk
gstreamer-alsa-0.8.11-4mdk
libalsa2-devel-1.0.9-1mdk
xmms-alsa-1.2.10-20mdk
libalsa-data-1.0.9-1mdk
alsa-utils-1.0.9-4mdk
