After telling my professor about the RSSI circuit on the 2400 board, he came back with this followup:

Please pay attention to some problems – for example, the time granularity that the RSSI is updated.

We once tried to get the RSSI reading from an off-the-shelf 802.11 interface. It turns out although you can read RSSI off a register, the register is only updated after it receives a frame.

I hope with the SDR hardware there is no such problem because anyway the data will have to be processed in the host computer in real-time.

Another question: do you know the rates of the input and output data between the host computer and the USRP board? Is the host computer fast enough (CPU, memory speed, disk, etc) to process that amount of data?

I don't know about the first issue, but as for the input/output data rates, isn't that given on the mobo data sheet?
