When i am typing the follwing thing
git branch --track next origin/next
git checkout next
its giving error that fatal:not a valid object name : 'origin next'
You might try:

takes care of the pre-requisites. It works on Fedora 12 through 14
and Ubuntu 9.04 and newer. You might want to give
it a try, rather than attempting to do things "piecemeal".
