sorry for replying so, but I unthinkingly set my subscription to digest and
couldn't get around to replying to your suggestion.

Well, I'm using Ubuntu 14.04. I used the many of the flags mentioned in the
pybombs recipe while ./configure and it seems to have worked. One other
thing I had added to ./configure was the --with-boost-libdir=/usr/local/lib
ie the location of boost.

I have successfully built thrift now but configuring hat would be a
different issue altogether.
