Could you please explain the problem with the font panel? That's a GUI class and I don't have any idea what the xlib backendmay do differntly here.
the fonts listed are often wrong, some may be missing. Usually I get a font called "NIL" and some fonts display white. This is reproduceable on a variety of different X servers, operating systems, etc...
the Nil font is probably an alarm bell :)
