Except GNUstep doesn't run on VMS. And if for example, you're also talking about resource forks, .zip files don't preserve resource forks, so you're back at square one. There is a tar like program (think it's called xar or something similar) which does preserve resource forks.

Actually, .zip files can preserve resource forks. The implementation just needs to know about them.
