I guess this is more of a general question, but why not focus on a
more 'original' clone and base it on Darwin?
Because there's no Darwin release?
There's Darwin 7.2.1, over a year old and not supporting current
Apple hardware. Selected hardware on i386, only.
There's Darwin 8.0.1, not rebuildable from public sources and
requiring SSE2 extensions on i386. Additionaly, it's known to be
neither stable nor reliable.
That said, there's an upcoming Darwin 8.x release expected. After
months of work, the small Darwin community finally seems to manage a
rebuild from sources Apple released as "open".
