Yes you are right. The GNUstep docs make no reference to -longValue
returning a long double data type. My mistake. I must have been
referring to a different source.

What documentation says that long double is supported? To the best
of my knowledge the GNUstep documentation does not say that, and I
haven't seen it in the Apple documentation either.
