That's a good idea - in fact it's a great idea on platforms that have symlinks :-) The reason the current implementation is different is that some platforms don't have symlinks ;-) The current implementation gets almost exactly the same result but without using symlinks - it uses a tiny wrapper script instead, so it is more portable. If you look at the 'debugapp' script you'll immediately see what I mean. It's probably a few milliseconds slower than symlinks (if available) but if you really need these milliseconds you can always use 'openapp --debug' to skip the wrapper script.
