A long time ago when Ubuntu made the transition to Xorg, I found myself
needing to set XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 to get GNUstep applications to run.
Maybe try something like this at the command line:

export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1
openapp TextEdit.app

and see if that solves the issue?
