Lars,

There was a bug in drag and drop handling which was recently fixed in
DBModeler. You may want to update everything.

Also... there are some issues presently with using GNUstep on GNOME since there
are some issues with it's window manager. I don't know if this is due to
non-compliance with the free-desktop standards on their end or something with
GNUstep itself... this needs to be worked on.

If you plan on demoing GNUstep you should do it on WindowMaker with the latest
from SVN.

Subject: DBModeler to Gorm drag&drop problem

Hi,

I am currently in the process of preparing a live-demo of DBModeler, Gorm and
ProjectCenter for FOSDEM similar to what Matt Rice did in his videos.

For that purpose I installed Ubuntu 8.10 inside a SUN VirtualBox VM. My aim
doing so is to show how easy it is to start developing with GNUstep. For the
same reason I got GNUstep and the dev-tools installed by the services that
Ubuntu provides. As you might know this is not the latest and greatest of
GNUstep but it works (somewhat).

One of the things that don't work seems to be drag and drop from DBModeler to
Gorm. I think I got everything needed installed and activated: DBModeler, Gorm,
the GDL2.palette. When I drag an entity or an relation from DBModeler into the
instances-window (is it called that way?) of Gorm the mouse cursor changes to a
small forbidden-sign.

When I now try to drop the entity or relationship snaps back into its place in
the DBModeler Window. I tried several modifier keys: shift, control, alt
(causes the whole window to move), command (shows the menu at the mouse
position), nothing worked so far.

Am I missing something?

What could be the cause for this? Incompatible versions of DBModeler, Gorm and
the GDL2.palette (I got some funky version 0.0.0(alpha) of DBModeler of 2006
(or was the info panel not updated), version 1.2.2 (Release) of Gorm of 5th of
November 2007 and an unknown version of the GDL2.palette (how do I find out the
version here?))?

Is it maybe Gnome which interferes with GNUstep here? I also tried Window Maker
what didn't help the cause a bit. What else could I try?

And my final question: Is there alternative way of getting the GDL2 stuff from
DBModeler inside Gorm? Otherwise this would possibly bust my talk since I don't
have that much time left to track down that issue.

Thanks,

    Lars
