I have been using the art backend for some time on OpenSuse 11.0 and it worked quite well. (Since then I switched to OpenSuse 11.1 and there the cairo backend has a problem) We have a few reported issues with the art backend, the most common one is the use of not supported X settings, like a wrong depth. The backend reports about that problem when you start an application. The other issues is something that I haven't been able to track down. It is related to FreeType fonts and you can read a lot about it in the bug report #25243.
