You're correct, it's not done like that today.
On NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP systems there was a process called
make_services... This is why GNUstep has this executable.
Your suggestion, though, make sense. The make_services program should
be run periodically so that registration of application associations
is automatic.
I think it should be run by the installer and/or by the package install
script of the host package script and/or by make install.
Running it periodically is a bit a waste. We don't really have yet a
standard environbment where we just install apps by drag-and-drop.
