Sounds like it is your Debian update causing the problem. I am also on cairo 1.10.2 but the additional number is 49.1 (OpenSuse 11.3 came with 42.2, which wasn't working for me). You could try to pull a more recent version of cairo (plus pixman, you always need both) from the Debian unstable repository.
