You don't need a separate shell, you can if you want. When you hit
"build" PC will create the makefile and make it, at your need. Thus you
essentially don't notice, exactly as you don't notice the execution of
jam or ant in other IDEs.
What you will sadly notice is that there are limitations in the PC
flexibility for more complex projects as well as the limited internal
editor.
Currently I thus manage most projects in the GNUstep Application Project
with PC, but edit my files with emacs. (And before you ask, sadly,
currently, there is no good emacs for GNUstep, thus there is poor
integration, I hope this will be improved)
