sorry - that means we do not have that feature but it was specific
support in gnustep-make, but it was an extra of certain makefiles.

Thanks! I think that is very sensible. If somebody runs "make distclea"
it is clear that he is intentionally starting from scratch, if not then
it is sensible to preserve his options!
I'll test at the first occasion and import your code also into gworkspace.
