Hi Ivan,

thanks for the pointer, with your help I found the implementation of that 
function in:

http://svn.gna.org/svn/gnustep/libs/base/trunk/Source/NSPathUtilities.m

which, after a cursory inspection looks fine to me and seems to do what it 
should.
